Also known as Ghoshark Teerth, the temple is built around the sacred Surya Kund, a revered water tank associated with several religious traditions. According to local belief, Lord Surya stayed near this place after attending the coronation of Lord Rama in Ayodhya. The present kund and temple are traditionally associated with Shakdwipiya Brahmin King Shree Darshan Singh, who constructed them in the early 19th century. The temple also houses deities including Ram-Sita, Lord Hanuman and the Shiva family.
Prachin Surya Kund Temple reflects traditional Hindu temple architecture and is centred around the sacred water tank known as Surya Kund. The temple’s shikhara rises above the shrine dedicated to Lord Surya, while the sanctum contains the principal deity of the temple. According to traditional descriptions, images of Shani Dev and Yamuna are placed near the feet of Surya Dev, along with other sacred representations within the complex. The premises also include shrines dedicated to Ram-Sita, Lord Hanuman, Shiva Parivar and Shaligram. The combination of the temple, sacred water tank and surrounding spaces creates a distinctive pilgrimage setting associated with Sun worship in Ayodhya.
